Abstract

The demand for productivity of laying poultry resulted in the adoption of technologies that increased the production results and maximized the contribution margins. However, the production model in cages, currently predominant in the laying poultry, has been challenged by the market, mainly with regard to the non provision of minimum conditions of welfare, which has forced many countries to develop legal devices to obligate their producers to adopt alternative models of rearing laying. It is not known what are the operating costs of these new models of rearing laying, though. Therefore the aim of this study is to compare the operating costs, productivity, internal and external quality and contamination of eggs from a laying farm with alternative system of poultry (countrified and organic) and a farm with a conventional creation system of rearing laying in cages. Data from operational costs will be collected through interviews in panel technique every 30 days. Egg production of the three farming systems will be monitored on the records of each of the farms for a year. The analysis of the quality of the eggs will be accomplished from samples of 60 eggs of each production systems every 30 days. Besides that, it will evaluate the contamination of 12 eggs of each breeding system every 30 days when Salmonella spp. The results will be compared among the three farming systems and between the two farms.
