Abstract

There is a processo of intensification in animal production, particularly in the eggs production. This process compromises the well-being in the poultry breeding. Consumers and society, in general, have been pushing for better welfare conditions in poultry farming, condemning the use of cages, resulting in pressure for changes in production systems. These changes imply investments and new costs associated with the promotion of animal welfare. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate this change from the point of view of animal welfare, product quality, and financially. This evaluation was made through the modeling of different productive systems, according to the use of cages. The survey of welfare, egg quality and financial indicators was carried out in two producers and three production systems, in the municipalities of Bastos and Tupa, State of Sao Paulo. Non-systematic observations were made on the farms regarding compliance with principles that indicate better animal welfare conditions. For egg quality, Haugh Unit, egg weight and bark resistance, were measured on the three systems in eight random sample collections of 60 eggs. The financial analysis was done by means of the measurement of the operational and total costs of production, besides the revenue per egg and the term of investment of the farms. The alternative farm met more animal welfare principles, despite having a higher incidence of pathologies in the lots. As for quality, only the Haugh Unit index was the alternative farm better off. Conventional farms had better external egg quality and lower operating costs than alternative farms. (AU)
