Abstract

Studies to help clarify the role of different domains of physical activity can help in a better understanding of the prognosis of chronic non-specific low back pain, helping clinicians and patients better understand the disease process and to predict more accurately the clinical outcomes. The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of different domains of physical activity, measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ - long version) and the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ), in predicting clinical outcomes in patients with low back pain. The study design is a longitudinal cohort with a follow-up of 6 months. During the initial assessment participants with non-specific chronic low back pain will complete a set of questionnaires, in which the following data will be collected: Anthropometric/ demographic data; duration and intensity of pain; inability; fear of movement; physical exertion at work; depression and subjective data on the level of physical activity (IPAQ and BAPQ). A second evaluation will be conducted in the follow-up 6 months. Clinical endpoints assessed at 6 months follow-up are: intensity of pain and disability. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation for data with normal distribution and median and interquartile range for non-normal data) will be conducted for all the measures of the initial evaluation. For the main purpose of this study, separate multivariate linear regression analyses will be conducted to investigate the ability of different domains of physical activity in predicting each of the clinical outcomes following 6 months.
