Abstract

The aim of this project is to establish the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of sevoflurane in calves by nasolabial electrical stimulation. For this purpose eight Holstein male calves, aged between six and twelve months, weighting 70-180 kg will be used. The animals will be induced to anesthesia with sevoflurane, administered by mask diluted in oxygen (5 L x minute-1), and immediately intubated with endotracheal tube compatible with the animal size. After a period of 15 minutes, in order to stabilize the initial concentration of the anesthetic agent (ETsevo = 2,6V %), the animals will be submitted to an electric stimulation at nasolabial region to determine the sevoflurane MAC. After each stimulus and being the response considered negative, the concentration will be reducing by 0.2 % and a period of 15 minutes will be respect for the stabilization of the new anesthetic plan before another electric stimulus application. The procedure will be repeated until the first concentration value, where there is a positive motor response. At this point, the concentration will be increased in 0.1 %, and a new stimulus will be made until a negative response could be obtained. The MAC value will be considered the arithmetic mean of the lower concentration able to produce a negative response and the highest concentration able to produce a positive response.
