Abstract

The Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC), University of Lisbon has a set of nearly 2,000 drawings and prints of zoology areas, botany, geography and anthropology as a result of expeditions to the old Portuguese empire held between the eighteenth centuries and XIX. The MUHNAC performed the survey of all these drawings related to naturalistic expeditions (Travel Philosophical, as they were known at the time) to the former Portuguese Empire, which has in its collection. The "Delete World" project to which this request Scientific Initiation bag is attached, aims to: 1) describe the drawings individually, emphasizing updated taxonomic identification of plant and animal species represented, in addition to landscapes and landmarks illustrated; 2) keep and make available the pictures online for free access of the scientific community and the public. This request is aimed at initiating an undergraduate student in the knowledge of the universe and practices of Natural History late eighteenth century early nineteenth century, through comparative investigation between the knowledge mobilized at the time and current knowledge. It is expected to contribute to training in History of Science and improvement in the specific subjects of Natural History, expanding the repertoire of knowledge and methodologies.
