Qualitative comparison among four different ventilatory modalities applied in prolonged anesthetic procedures in rabbits positioned in lateral recumbency

Abstract

Currently, the use of different ventilation modalities is increasing in Veterinary Anesthesiology. But most of the research in this area uses the human medicine as a reference, as publications and experiments are not advanced in veterinary medicine. Maintaining a proper respiratory function is essential for a safe and effective anesthesia. It is known that patient recumbency and the use of analgesics such as opioids alter the respiratory dynamics, interfering with hemodynamic balance and anesthetic stability. Long procedures associated with the use of opioids are common in veterinary medicine such as orthopedic procedures. In this study, spontaneous ventilation, pressure control ventilation, pressure control ventilation with positive end-expiratory pressure and synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation will be qualitatively compared. The ventilation modalities will be compared in four different groups of rabbits anesthetized with isoflurane during two hours and placed in the lateral recumbency. Cardiovascular and respiratory variables will be recorded at different moments and after, the results will be statistically evaluated by the least squares method, followed by the Tukey - Kramer test (p <0.05).
