Abstract

This project's main argumentative line relies on the repositioning of the relevance of radio in contemporaneity. Such observation takes in account how listeners form communities, how they feel to pertain to a social group, and how they negotiate cultural identities. The radio enterprise immersed in a digital scenario has been transmuted into something more than a broadcast company, thus facing a broad and open competition with other media. This requires mixed solutions, with former and new strategies, in order to maintain its audience. We, then, propose to recognise and highlight the position radio occupies in the digital environment, as well the necessary changes in the radio language and in how listeners use the medium. The starting point bares on the need to discuss the 'concept of radio', in order to understand it as a 'social institution'. This broader conception allows the integrated observation of multiple fields defined by the word radio: the technological supports, the language, the positioning in mass media market, the labour domain, and the social negotiations that are operated under the scope of a radio enterprise. We aim to construct a discussion on the current models of content production, and in which extent these models converge with the new positions listeners have been occupying in a scenario of transition from analogue to digital technologies. Such discussion will be possible through an empirical observation of a defined sample of radio stations, selected from four Brazilian capitals, completed with a large bibliographic survey interested both in the Brazilian and the foreign intellectual production - especially from countries where radio industry is (has been) better organized.
