Abstract

Regional and local tomography can be a valuable method to constrain earth structure down to upper mantle and transition zones depths. Values of Vp, Vs and Vp/Vs ratios can be obtained by inverting traveltime picks. Synthetic tests can be made to validate the results and test possible interpretations against the available data. There are many different codes developed by different authors and as final benchmark all should return comparable results. In Brazil, since 1992 the same code has been used to perform seismic tomography in a consecutive series of correlated works. We propose to use a new code (LOTOS) to execute a tomography using data from RSBR station joined with temporary stations operated as part of this thematic project. To learn the pitfalls of tomographic inversion an initial work with a pre picked catalog from the Puna-Altiplano region will be used in the initial months, while the stations from this project are being deployed.
