Abstract

The objective of this research is to assess whether the integrated crop-livestock systems (ICL) involving corn, pigeon pea and oats in consortium with marandugrass, can be used in the control of worms in sheep. The ICL systems will be evaluated: (1) corn + palisadegrass + oats spread out manually; (2) corn + marandugrass + pigeon pea + oats spread out manually; (3) corn + marandugrass + oats on the line; (4) corn + marandugrass + pigeon pea + oats in line. Will be evaluated two experimental cycles (2015/ 2016 and 2016/ 2017) and in each cycle 48 male lambs (n = 12) crossbred Dorper x Santa Ines with 90 days of age and 25 kg body weight will be used. Rotational grazing system (12 paddocks per treatment) with 3 days of occupation and 33 days of rest will be employed. At the end of the day the lambs will be collected for a covered shed with a dirt floor lined with bark dried coffee, in which the test-lambs of each treatment will be allocated in the same pens and will be supplemented with concentrate + silage from the same treatment. In order to check if the pasture is free from contamination by gastrointestinal parasites before the animals enter, will be three collections grazing in each paddock with an interval of nine days between them. At the beginning the lambs trial will be treated with monepantel (2.5 mg / kg of body weight (BW), Zolvix®, Novartis Animal Health) to eliminate infection Trichostrongylideos. Every 12 days, the animals will be weighed to estimate weight gain and fecal samples from the rectum of animals will be collected to make the eggs per gram of feces (EPG) and composite fecal cultures, blood will also be collected to verify the packed cell volume (PCV). Every nine days samples of the pasture will be collected to check their contamination by infective larvae (L3) of gastrointestinal parasites. After 72 days the experimental lambs are slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. The abomasum and small and large intestine are collected for recovery of worms and subsequent identification and counting thereof. It is expected to validate the ICP system as a method of control of sheep worms. (AU)
