Abstract

Results of structural optimization should be robust with respect to the uncertainties inherent to strength of materials and structural actions. This observation has led to the development of diferente methodologies for structural optimization under uncertainties: stochastic or robust optimization, fuzzy optimization, reliability-based optimization and risk optimization. However, a review of the literature shows that few authors have addressed uncertainty quantification and their impact in future performance of a structure. Among the few papers found on the subject, most employ design based on compliance, which is mathematically simpler to formulate and implement. However, such approaches are not useful for many practical applications. This project proposes a study of topology optimization under uncertainties using a stress-based design criterion, which is more usefull for practical structural reliability applications. Two formulations will be considered: reliability-based and risk optimization. Risk optimization allows one to consider the consequences of failure in the optimal form of a structure, as well as finding the optimal point of balance between diferent failure modes of a structure. This project has application to several branches of engineering, such as structural design (civil eng.), and in automotive & aeronautical engineering
