Abstract

With the arrival of the royal family and their court to the tropics, Rio de Janeiro became the most important city of ninetheenth century Brazil. At the opening of the harbors to friendly nations, the flow of foreign goods and people increased considerably and the daily lives of those who lived here incorporated some urbanity and modernization features. Based on the idea that the arrival of European professionals, especially the British and French, was responsible for introducing some habits unknown by Brazilians until then, this research aims to apprehend, through journals and adornments on the construction of chic and beautiful parameters in Rios fashion. We will start, therefore, whith the arrival of french stylists and dressmakers in the early nineteenth century that, in general, settled in stores at Ouvidor Street and there they offered all that could be of interest to the ladies: hats, gloves, dresses, fans, fines fabrics and assorted ornaments. We will attempt to investigate to what extent the French clothing offered by fashion designers, as well as those described in the journals, became, in the mid-century, objects of desire of the locals of the good society. In short, our purpose is to understand the contribution of the French garments for the creation of a womens fashion standard in the tropics, especially in Rio de Janeiro.
