Abstract

Cancer is a chronic disease that occurs due to uncontrolled growth of cells. The disease comprises gliomas which are brain tumors originating from glial cells. The most widely used treatments to combat these tumors, in addition to surgery, are chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Despite the considerable effect in reducing the number of cancerous cells, in some cases failure occurs due to capacity gained by these cells to lower cytoplasmic concentration levels of various drugs administered, favoring cell resistance. In this context, it is observed that the activities of polyunsaturated fatty acids in different resistant cells increase cell permeability and enabling efficient action of the treatment. This indicates that in addition to directly reducing cell proliferation by apoptosis, fatty acids may assist the action of chemotherapy in resistant cells preventing tumor growth. Therefore, the main purpose of the study is to analyze the role of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids in sensitive and multi-drug resistant human glioma and rat glioma cell lines in vitro in order to verify the effects on tumor growth and action of chemotherapy after watching the activity of the combination of drugs and fatty acids in vivo.
