Abstract

The research proposes to study the participatory process of urban collectives in redefining the public spaces of the city of São Paulo. The study will investigate the emergence of the urban collectives and their ways of working which have been developed in the context of the city’s public spaces and the contradictions between space and the user. By considering the participatory practice in the discussion of the city, the intention is to understand how the government has been working with these movements and how they can help develop more inclusive public spaces. As a case study, it will analyze the possibilities and limitations involved in the performance of two urban collectives operating in the city of São Paulo: Acupuntura Urbana, which develops urban intervention work in public spaces of the city and now demonstrates a consolidated and comprehensive working structure; and the collective Ocupe e Abrace which has a more precise role within neighborhoods and is engaged in the improvement of Praça da Nascente in the district of Pompéia. Both collectives will be approached and observed with the intention of showing the dynamics of their daily lives and how they carry out their activities within society and the city. (AU)
