Abstract Recent studies regarding arid to semiarid fluvial systems have been conducted, on the last few years, through detailed field studies and laboratorial analysis. Fluvial deposits from the Bauru Group, located in the Triângulo Mineiro region (Serra da Galga Member), build up layers of medium-coarse immature sand, showing trough cross stratifications, suggesting permanent channelized flow, although probably related to a variable water supply system established upon an arid to semiarid environment. Such elements point out to a complex fluvial system, presumably associated to a braided fluvial system rather than an alluvial fan, as interpreted in the literature. By applying facies analysis, architectural analysis, geological mapping and sequence stratigraphy, the deposits from the Serra da Galga Member offer a robust database on the study of arid to semiarid fluvial systems. This project aims to comprehend the behaviour of this river style using a spatio-temporally detailed approach which allows establishing an architectural and dynamic interpretation model for the studied river system, acknowledging lateral and downstream changes in both channels and floodplains.
