Abstract

The municipality of Mauá, located in the southeast of the Greater São Paulo and part of the so-called ABC, has as one of its main features a seemingly disorganized occupation. This occupation took shape and was consolidated in the following decades as a result of industrial growth and metropolization process that begins in the 1940s. The research wants to analyze the constitution of this territory. Taking as initial point 1938, beginning of the process of emancipation of the cities of ABC - when the seat of the municipality changed from São Bernardo to Santo André - followed until 1985 - year marks the re-democratization of the country and changes in the economic dynamics of the region. The goal is to understand the land structuring of Mauá in its relationship with the social processes of establishment of the ABC region and the metropolis itself, seeking to clarify the dynamics that made her turn into a "dormitory town". Assuming that the installation of industries in the region was a major inducer of occupation, the survey will seek to establish relations between the territory and the metropolitan dynamics that have developed since then. Therefore, the work will build on the survey specific documentation: cartography of the region; IBGE data; specialized bibliography and official documents (laws and decrees, as well as titles of property). The intention is to bring together a set of materials that allow understand specifically the formation of Mauá, a part of the ABC still little studied.
