Abstract

Our goal is to understand the role played by caricatures on the paulista newspaper A Lanterna - folha anticlerical e de combate's strategy to combat clericalism, during its second phase, years 1909 to 1916. I demonstrate how the periodical used the contradictions between Christian doctrine and practice so, through the representations, it could try to question the clerical mentality prevailing on society then, based on libertarian ideals, such as secularization of the State. This work is guided by the theoretical approach related to the history of reading, in which the history of press is understood as a field of interest where production, diffusion and reception of the prints cross, in the sense used by Robert Darnton, and the meanings taken on by the ideals disseminated by them as well as their sociocultural speeches. My methodological approach consists of gathering and compiling the images; organizing and sorting them according to previously established criteria, preferably, the ones suggested by the source; and ultimately, to analyze and to divulge the results. This project arises from the experience gained in the project IC/PIBIC Leitura de jornais: compilação iconográfica dirigida. Pesquisa em fontes primárias, authoring and guindace of doctor teacher Valéria dos Santos Guimarães, as well as dialogue with the two ongoing projects of the said teacher, History of the periodical press reading and History and culture: representations, imaginary and society.
