Abstract

Classical ballet dancers are known for the ability to perform movements that require a wide joint range of motion, making use of special shoes, which can be ballet slipper or pointe shoes. At the early stages of practice, the dancer learns how to dance using ballet slippers and afterwards using pointe shoes. The differences between these two forms of dance are still unknown, as well as the different ways to begin a movement. This study aims to analyze, describe and compare the arabesque pose with pointe shoes and ballet slippers started by pique and relevé. During the performance of arabesques in the different conditions, the kinematics of the ankle, knee and hip will be evaluated. This knowledge can be applied to the improvement of the dancer's techniques and dance teaching. (AU)
