The language, the body and the voice of the people: a Discourse Analysis of the media regarding Lula's public electoral speech

Abstract

This project aims to analyze discourses regarding the speech and the voice of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva produced and / or conveyed by contemporary Brazilian media and materialized in texts of newspapers and national magazines. Based on the Discourse Analysis derived from the work of Michel Pêcheux alongside with Michel Foucault's contributions, we will seek to identify what is said about the speech and the voice of Lula and how the statements about him were made during his election campaigns. More precisely, our purpose is to answer questions such as: what did the Brazilian media say about Lula's pronouncements and voice in the five election campaigns in which he was one of the candidates and how did they say it? What are the statements produced by the Brazilian media that are resumed, reformulated and erased that concern the quality, the characteristics and the transformations of the speech and the voice of Lula and what are the fields that these statements come from? Are there any references more or less specialized to the segmental and suprasegmental features, prosodic modulation of melody and dinamics and also the tone of his voice in these evaluations of his oratory performance? What are the rhetorical strategies and the candidate's linguistic qualities mentioned by experts and non-experts in media texts? Are there any variations on the way how the speech and the voice of Lula are approached as they are described by columnists and writers considered to be progressive or conservative? In order to formulate answers to these questions, we will analyze a series of texts of the newspapers Folha de São Paulo and O Estado de São Paulo and the magazines Veja and Carta Capital, published between 1989 and 2006.
