Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a condition characterized by elevated blood glucose (hyperglycaemia). It may be related to defects in the release or action of the hormone insulin, which promotes the entry of glucose into the cells of the body. The objective is to evaluate pulmonary function and respiratory mechanics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It will be studied sixty (60) male subjects, divided into two groups: DM group consisting of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM; n = 30) and control group characterized by non-diabetic volunteers (CG, n = 30). For the DM control group, male subjects studied must be sedentary, non-smokers, non-alcoholic and non-hypertensives. Individuals of both groups will be selected and evaluated previously by measuring weight, height, thoracoabdominal cytometry, pulmonary function test and manovacuometry. We expect that individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus show changes in lung function and respiratory mechanics when compared with healthy individuals considering the same age and gender.
