Abstract

In order to understand locomotor adaptation and its usefulness to gait rehabilitation, the effects observed during walking with partial body weight support (PBWS) and the locomotor adaptation to overground walking, which is the surface we walk on daily basis, will be investigate in this research project. The target population will be individuals with hemiparesis due to stroke that usually participate on gait training with PBWS. They will be allocated randomically to a specific training group that will receive a single 15 minutes session of gait training with PBWS over the ground (OGG) or on a treadmill (TMG), and each participant will be evaluated before the training session ("free walking"), during the first 5 minutes of gait training with PBWS, during the last 5 minutes of gait training with PBWS and after the training session ("free walking"). A sensor (Gait Up) will be placed on each participants' foot and will register spatial-temporal parameters. Variability, symmetry ratio, transference index measurements and gait spatial-temporal parameters will be calculated for all evaluations.
