Abstract

The knowledge of the ecological niches of phytopathogenic bacteria is essential for the efficient management of plant bacteriosis. The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the main legumine for human consumption worldwide, because it is an important food for many development countries. The common bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap), is one of the main bean diseases in most producing countries, including Brazil, and little is known about the host range. This research project will be the first developed under Brazilian climatic conditions in order to find weeds as hosts of Xap. To reach this objective, a rifampicin-resistant Xap strain will be used to quantify cells living on weeds phylloplane, by using a semi-seletive culture medium. The assays will be conducted under field conditions during the years 2016 and 2017, in order to determine how climatic conditions can affect the survival of Xap. We expect to identify which are the weeds hosts of Xap, that consist an high important information applied to the efficient management of bean common bacterial blight. (AU)
