Abstract

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important constituent of Brazilian feeding, as well as has an important role in the national economy. Brazil stands out as the third largest producer and consumer of this crop, however, bean productivity is very low, especially due to the low technification of farmers. Diseases are one of the main factors associated with this low productivity and common bacterial blight, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap) stands out as a major disease for the crop in many regions of the country. This research project will be the first developed under Brazilian conditions for the identification of host species of Xap. To achieve this goal a Xap strain resistant to rifampicin will be used and the bacterium will be quantified in the phylloplane and rhizosphere of cotton, peanuts, oat, beans, corn, soybeans, sorghum and wheat plants. With the results we expect to identify which are the main crop species that are hosts of Xap in Brazil, essential information for the adoption of more efficient management practices for the control of bean common bacterial blight.
