Abstract

One hundred and one years after the discovery of Chagas disease, it remains on the list of neglected diseases and continues victimizing thousands of people, mainly in the poorest regions of Latin America. Caused by Trypanosoma cruzi parasite, it is a silent disease because it can remain asymptomatic for years. Over the past 40 years, only two products have been applied to the treatment of Chagas disease and currently only one product is available on the market in most countries. Moreover, these two drugs do not treat the chronic phase and have severe side effects. In recent years, there has been progress in efforts to develop new drugs with trypanocidal activity and many studies have been conducted in this area. The metal complexes are the main targets of this research. We intend to evaluate trypanocidal activity, becoming a relationship between the structures of the complexes and biological activity in order to obtain potential drugs for the treatment of Chagas disease.
