Abstract

This project intents to comprehend the construction of the narratives regarding Brazilian popular music in its relation with North American cultural production, especially jazz. Having in mind its the massive presence in Rio de Janeiro from 1920 till 1950, my objective is to investigate the means by which the understanding of an authentic "Brazilian culture", expressive of a national identity, depended on the dialogue, sometimes veiled sometimes evident with foreign cultural forms. The access to North American symbolic goods, resulting from the consolidation of an urban mass culture, created a kind of sociability in which jazz-bands and 'rodas de samba' shared the same space, rendering possible different ways to represent and experience modernity through music and the body. In this sense, to think about the circulation of cultural production beyond national boundaries and beyond the notion of a "cultural genuineness", permits look upon the nation's (and nationality's) constitution as a relational process that articulates micro-politics of identity as well as worldwide power relations.
