Abstract

This research project is part of a current thematic project financed by FAPESP, named "Projeto de História do Português Paulista II", also called "Projeto Caipira II". Within this thematic project, the supervisor of the current proposal has developed a research on the process of Topic Organization, under the perspective of Textual-Interactive Grammar. The research conducted by the supervisor has the purpose of analyzing the historical development of the process of Topic Organization in some of the genres studied in that thematic project. In this context, the current proposal is organized as a subproject of the research conducted by its supervisor and it focuses on the functioning of Topic Organization in editorials published in newspapers of the State of São Paulo in the 21st century. The investigation addresses the two levels of Topic Organization: intertopic articulation and intratopic articulation. As regards the first level, the purpose is to identify the existence (as well as the degree) of hierarchical intertopic complexity in the genre under consideration, taking into account its use in the 21st century. As for the second level, the purpose of the investigation is to analyze whether, nowadays, that genre presents a general rule of intratopic articulation and to describe such rule. Moreover, the analysis of both levels includes the purpose of identifying the fundamental communicative function that editorials play in society, in order to analyze how this function influences Topic Organization. The proposed investigation will follow an empiric method and it will be a qualitative research. The corpus of analysis will be composed by editorials published in the newspapers called "Folha de S. Paulo" and "O Estado de S. Paulo".
