Abstract

The actions of standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb) the improvement of memory has been demonstrated by our group from data which showed that conditioned suppression resulted in increased expression of CREB-1 (mRNA and protein) in the dorsal hippocampus of rats. Understanding these effects is needed for studies on the molecular mechanisms associated with this modification. Several studies have suggested that glutamatergic, GABAergic and serotonergic transmission are involved in memory formation and thus may be targets of modulatory effects observed for EGb. Thus, this study aims to analyze the expression of GABA receptor GABAA type alpha subunit 5 in the dorsal hippocampus of rats subjected to extinction of conditioned emotional response as well as in groups submitted to treatment with antagonists and agonists of the aforementioned routes. It is expected that the results allow hypotheses modulation of pathways analyzed the effects of the extract in the region studied. (AU)
