Abstract

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment has started to attract attention and concern of the scientific community in recent years. However, only a few studies have focused on anticancer drugs, a class of pharmaceuticals that can exhibit cytotoxic, genotoxic, mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic effects. In Brazil, the absence of basic sanitation, irregular discharge and inefficiency of sewage treatment plants, exacerbates water contamination. In this context, tertiary (advanced) treatment methods have been studied to address this environmental concern. Among these methods, it highlights the advanced oxidation processes. Thus, the objectives of this project include studying the degradation of anticancer drugs (cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil) in hospital effluent. The degradation of these compounds will be carried out by heterogeneous photo-Fenton process using copper modified magnetite and iron mining residues as catalysts. The characterization of the synthesized materials will be evaluated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and by photoelectron spectroscopy induced by x-rays (XPS) aiming to correlate the activity as a catalyst in Fenton reactions to its structure and surface characteristics. The photodegradation kinetics of the analytes will be evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS) and fluorescence (FLD) detection. The dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) will be used for extraction and pre-concentration of cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil in aqueous samples. The methodology proposed in this project aims to use materials and cost-effective processes and environmentally friendly. (AU)
