Abstract

Due to the increase in the use of antibiotics, concern about improper disposal and the use of inefficient techniques to treat contaminated water in treatment plants, since antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics has been considered one of the main public health problems in the 21st century. In this context, the aim of this project is the degradation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole, two antibiotics widely used in Brazil, by heterogeneous fenton and photo-fenton processes using low cost materials such as iron mining waste and clay with immobilized iron. It is also proposed a comparison of the degradation efficiency, evaluated by the determination of degradation products. The presence of organic and inorganic species in the effluent can considerably decrease the degradation of the target contaminants with different catalysts. The variability of the characteristics of the hospital effluent and Araraquara sewage treatment plant, which affect the degradation efficiency of antibiotics, will also be evaluated, as well as the efficiency of the hospital effluent disinfection.
