Abstract

Yttria tetragonal zirconia polycristals (Y-TZP) is a promising material but presents hydrothermal instability at low temperatures by transformation of the metastable tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase, which may lead to low temperature degradation (LTD), that may compromise the materials mechanical properties and the predictability of rehabilitation treatments in the long-term. This project aims to innovate in the synthesis of polycrystalline composites with 85% alumina reinforced by 15% of conventional zirconia (ZTA - zirconia toughened alumina) for the dental field which highlight the best features of both the alumina as well as the zirconia, resulting in materials with improved mechanical properties compared to alumina and resistant to LTD. A conventional ZTA composite will be fabricated with conventional zirconia powder. It will be characterized the optical properties, the crystalline phases by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and topography by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
