Abstract

Yttrium tetragonal zirconia polycristals (Y-TZP) is a promising material that presents hydrothermal instability at low temperatures due to metastable transformation of the tetragonal to monoclinic phase, which may lead to low temperature degradation (LTD), eventually compromising the mechanical properties and reliability of prosthetic treatments in the long-term. This project aims to innovate in the synthesis of polycrystalline composites comprised by 80% alumina reinforced with 20% translucent zirconia (ZTA - zirconia toughened alumina) for dentistry seeking for the best properties of both alumina and zirconia resulting in materials with improved mechanical resistance compared to alumina and resistant to LTD. ZTA composites will be fabricated with translucent zirconia powders to improve optical properties, and a control Y-TZP experimental group made with translucent powder will be used for comparisons. Materials optical properties, crystalline phases, and biaxial flexural resistance and reliability will be evaluated both before and after an accelerated aging protocol.
