Abstract

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a myocardial disease of genetic origin and hereditary that in dogs, which has a high prevalence in Boxers. Histologically, there is atrophy of cardiomyocytes of right ventricle (RV) and consequent fibroadipose infiltration, leading to the onset of ventricular arrhythmias (VA) that may lead to sudden death. Even though the mostly of myocardial changes are microscopic, current studies have suggested that there is contractile RV dysfunction even at the early stages of the disease, but this condition can often not be diagnosed by conventional echocardiographic techniques. For this reason, the aim of this study is to evaluate if Boxer dogs ARVC presents detectable cardiac changes by specific echocardiographic evaluation and using others more specific and sensitive echocardiographic techniques. Boxer dogs older than four years will be used on this studie, they will be divided into two groups according to the result of 24-hour holter monitoring (control group: <50 VA/24h, n=10, affected group: >100VA/24h, n=10). The animals will be subjected to echocardiographic examination, which will be assessed internal diameter and length in systole and diastole of the RV, fractional area change (FAC) of the VD, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) - systolic myocardial velocity of the lateral tricuspid annulus (S') and speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) - derived longitudinal strain and strain rate. The variables will be compared among groups by the Student's t test. The diagnostic accuracy of each parameter will be tested by the ROC curve. All statistical tests will be performed with a significance level of 5% (p <0.05). (AU)
