Abstract

Thoracostomy is considered the adequate form of treatment for pleural empyema phase III in patients who do not tolerate pulmonary decortication. However, this treatment is considered mutilating once it involves a stoma producing by ribs resection, which can take years to close, or require further closure surgery. Recent study has described a new minimally invasive technique that can improve the functional and aesthetic results and shorten the time until the empyema is solved. However, there are no studies comparing the new technique with the classical technique. This work aims to compare the Minithoracostomy associated with vacuum sealing drainage versus classical Thoracostomy regarding the effectiveness and complication rates. (AU)
