Abstract

There has been a growth of research projects dedicated to the study of the cognitive phenomena known as Absolute Pitch (AP) and Relative Pitch (RP), a fact directly related to the growth of research projects on cognition and music perception over the last years. To study a cognitive phenomenon, firstly the researcher must know its object of study, i.e., it is needed a construct definition. However, there is yet not a validated construct of any of these cognitive abilities (AP and RP). Consequently, the main purpose of this project is to develop a theoretical model for both AP and RP, mapping their similarities and differences. In order to corroborate these, it will be necessary to gather evidences provided by experimental tests, which will allow their adequate evaluation and improvement. Based on solid empirical evidences and on theoretical foundations, the resulting models for AP and RP should provide an important contribution to the scientific community dedicated to the study of these abilities, as researches will be able to use them as a starting point for future researches.
