Abstract This thesis project aims to analyze the United States internal construction of ideas and political consensus towards the following foreign interventions: Kosovo in 1998; Iraq, during the Gulf Crisis in 1991 and after in 2003 during the war on terrorism context; Afghanistan in 2001, also within the war on terrorism logic; and Libya in 2011. This research is central to perform the process-tracing methodology presented in the PhD thesis project entitled "War is Peace: the United States securitization praxis after the Cold War", within which this thesis project is embedded. Our main objective is to comprehend how the subtle changes in the role of exceptionalism and the construction of a reinforced American identity after 1989 reshaped U.S. foreign policy. During our stay in the U.S., the research will focus on the idea that a specific ideological exacerbation of the exceptionalist identity within society and political ranks plus a favorable international atmosphere allowed the US to adapt its institutions and rethink its role in the international system.
