Abstract

Sonification is one of the recent techniques that use the most of possibilities offered by digital technologies and it consists basically of the mapping of data to specific sounds parameters, just as, in the visual realm, data could be represented in graphs and charts. Even though it was created as a scientific research tool that uses sound in a functional way and allows users to monitor and analyze data, sonification in the art realm not necessarily answers the scientific method principles. The objective of this research project is to investigate the specificities in the usage of sonification procedures in the general field of sound-based arts, and thus reflecting on the mapping dynamics aesthetic and technical possibilities. Then, four artistic sonification projects will be analyzed based on the studied concepts and categories.
