In vitro evaluation of TiF4 and NaF varnishes on white spot remineralization around orthodontic brackets

Abstract

Controlling white spot lesions developing around orthodontic brackets is a major challenge for clinicians and patients because of the difficulty in removing biofilm during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, it has been proposed the use of products that, besides promote remineralization of enamel, increase its mechanical strength. The objective of this study is to evaluate in vitro the effectiveness of titanium tetrafluoride (TiF4) compared to NaF in remineralization of white spot lesions adjacent to orthodontic bracket. Thirty premolars extracted for orthodontic indication will be used. The teeth will be submitted to the bracket bonding, induction artificial lesion white spot and allocated randomly into the following groups according to the treatment they will receive: 1) TiF4 4% (n = 10), 2) 5% NaF (n = 10), 3) deionized water - control (n = 10). After 7 days, 5 teeth from each group will be used to quantify the remineralization with Transverse Microradiography (TMR) and the other 5 for structural characterization by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The data will be described and analyzed at a significance level of 5%.
