Abstract

The bone quality and quantity directly influence the success of the implant-supported rehabilitation. Computed tomography (CT) is the "gold standard" imaging modality for bone evaluation. However, it remains a tool which is not applicable in all cases of the clinical practice. Therefore, the conventional radiographs are still the first choice in many instances. The purpose of this study will be to comparatively evaluate bone quality findings obtained by means of radiographs (panoramic and periapical), as compared to conventional multislice computed tomography. For this, records of 40 patients in need of installation of dental implants will be selected from the files of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of the Araraquara Dental School, São Paulo State University- UNESP, SP, Brazil. All selected records will include conventional multislice CT images, as well as panoramic and periapical digital radiographs taken with an aluminum scale in the last two years. Evaluation of the radiographs using the VixWin 2000 software will allow determination of the optical density and the bone quality will be evaluated in the panoramic radiographs, according to Lekholm e Zarb (1985). The CT images will allow the evaluation of bone density, which will be expressed in Hounsfield Units (HU). Thus, will be possible to determine a quantitative scale of bone density based on HU for the different bone qualities, besides comparing results with the parameters described in the literature.
