Abstract

One of the main issues associated to the implantation of orthopedic biomaterials that stand high loadings comes from the stress shielding phenomenon. The difference between the modulus of elasticity of the metals and the bone promotes a significant loss of the bone mineral density and the consequent loosening of the implant, leading to the necessity of revision surgeries. Such issue is intensified due to the increase of the life expectancy of the population. In order to obtain implants with higher durability, titanium alloys were introduced in this industry, especially the Ti-6Al-4V alloy as a result of the biocompatibility, tensile strength and lower modulus of elasticity in comparison to the Co-Cr alloys (240 GPa) and the stainless steels (210 GPa). In spite of the massive use of this alloy, its modulus around 110 GPa is still relatively high. The worldwide tendency of research and development has focused on the metastable beta-type titanium alloys, ever since they provide lower modulus values in relation to Ti-6Al-4V, below 85 GPa. However, these values are obtained when the beta phase is predominant. With the partial transformation of beta to alpha phase, the modulus increases and becomes closer to the value of the Ti-6Al-4V. In this way, the current studies especially focus the physical metallurgy of the alloys, the phase transformations and biocompatibility and cellular interaction aspects. One of the most important aspects for the application in orthopedic implants that stand high loadings still requires many studies, which is the analysis of the mechanical properties, mainly the dynamic ones. So, the present work intends to assess the fatigue performance of the metastable beta Ti-12Mo-6Zr-2Fe (TMZF) alloy depending on the microstructure and on the respective modulus of elasticity. The understanding of the mechanism associated to the fatigue crack, resulting from the existing microstructure, will be sought as a way to allow the optimization of this property.
