Voicing my CHOiCESTM: cross-cultural adaptation and validation of an advance care planning tool for Brazilian young adults with cancer

Abstract

Given the importance of having culturally appropriate tools that allow for essential communication about advance care planning, this study aims to implement a cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the North-American tool Voicing My CHOiCESTM. Eligible participants will be Brazilian patients with cancer, between 18 to 39 years of age, receiving care at the School of Medicine at Ribeirão Preto Clinical Hospital. The document will be translated by two independent bilingual translators, and the translations' synthesis will be evaluated by judges and the target-population for semantic validation. The back-translation will be made by two other independent translators and will be discussed with the original authors of Voicing My CHOiCESTM, evaluating the content pertinence and adequacy. A pilot study will be conducted to evaluate the feasibility and helpfulness of this tool in the Brazilian context, as well as to determine potential barriers and benefits. The participants will complete an evaluation of anxiety and will be invited to critically evaluate the tool and to complete three pages. After a period of three to seven weeks, a semi-structured interview will be conducted to evaluate the impact on anxiety surrounding end-of-life care planning and communication of preferences. Qualitative data will be analyzed by thematic content analyses and quantitative data will be analyzed by descriptive analyses. The anxiety data will be compared by parametric or non-parametric analyses and ANOVA test. Including young adults in end-of-life discussions may contribute to enhanced communication about care preferences, and improved quality of life. (AU)
