Abstract

The textile industry is one of the largest consumers and global polluters of water and currently employs sludge tanks enabled for remediation of wastewater. This technology requires the control of microorganisms, dispenses considerable time in treatment, can generate bioproducts even more toxic than the treated effluent and need landfills for sludge disposal. The use of biosorbents, ferromagnetic nanoparticles and composites formed by their combination have been reported as an alternative to treat this kind of effluent with high contaminant removal capacity. Despite the advantage of instantaneous sorption, which allows the rapid availability of treated water for reuse, the use of sorption process also is limited by the necessity of disposal of contaminated solid waste. Additionally, advanced oxidation process (AOP) has also been reported as an alternative to treatment of textile effluents. However, the large volumes of effluent to treat and the cost and time required to provide the treated water to reuse represent limiting points of these processes. The combination of sorption and AOP can be an interesting alternative to treat textile effluents, in order to provide a rapid availability of water for reuse with subsequent treatment of the solid contained material in a small-scale system. This project will employ bio-nano-ferromagnetic composite prepared with yeast biomass from sugarcane industry and nanoparticles of magnetite for sorption of reactive textile dye, and treat the contaminated solid waste using the iron present in magnetite as Fenton's reagent saving the use of chemicals for oxidative treatment.
