Distress behavior and pain reactivity in children in PICU

Abstract

This study aims to examine the pain intensity and distress levels in children hospitalized in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the association between pain history and distress level of inpatients. The study sample will comprise of 30 children aged 12 months and six years, who are admitted to the PICU of the Hospital of Clinics - HCFMRP-USP. The data collection will include observation of pain reactivity (The Faces, Legs, Activity, Cry and Consolability - FLACC and COMFORT Scales) and distress behaviors (Observational Scale of Behavioral Distress - OSBD) of children during painful puncture procedures, which are routine in hospital. For the evaluation of the distress experienced in the environmental context of PICU will be applied The Neonatal Infant Stressor Scale (NISS) from the medical chart review. The descriptive statistical analysis and correlation will be performed (Pearson test) to examine the association between pain history and distress levels of children.
