Abstract

This project aims to evaluate the extent of alternative splicing of transcripts in muscle tissue of male Nellore animals (not castrated) extreme for Rib Eye Area (REA) and extreme for intramuscular fat (IF) content, using transcript data obtained by RNA-Seq. Nellore cattle are among the most economically important agricultural animals in Brazil. However, a lack of genetic information remains an obstacle to understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in determining the carcass and meat traits of these animals. Therefore, evaluation of the patterns of transcript expression and the extent of alternative splicing of transcripts in Nellore cattle will provide a foundation for further research on the specific functions of candidate genes related to bovine REA and IF content, and thus contribute to the production of high quality meat.
