Abstract

The present research project intends to analyse Eugène Delacroix's paintings of The Four Seasons which he executed for the Alsatian industrial and collector Frédéric Hartmann between 1856-63, reflecting on their relationship with the theme development in visual tradition and with other works by the artist. Besides, we aim to raise a discussion on the "unfinished" matter in Delacroix's creative process, already detected by 19th century critics. The idea is to provide an interpretation concerning the works not only separately, but also as a set, clarifying obscure points on the commission and the canvases' history until their arrival at Masp collection.
