Abstract

This project proposes a research on the studies sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the subject of immigration between the 1940s and 1960s. Although in the last fifteen years researchers have investigated the participation of Brazilianists and Brazilian social scientists in the UNESCO project on race showing a fertile period of the debate on race relations in Brazil , until today few researchers have discussed the immigration issue. Thus, this research project seeks to expand the currently understandings on the subject of immigration and its relationship to the development of sociology and anthropology in the Brazilian Post-War context, focusing on studies sponsored by UNESCO. It is intended to investigate the central intellectual trajectories in that context, the international networks of researchers and the theoretical and methodological contents that influenced these studies. Special attention will be given to the Brazilian case, in order to show that the studies to be analyzed can potentially reveal the contribution exerted by the scientific knowledge on relevant issues in the Post-War Brazilian society, such as prejudice, racism, segregation, inclusion social, democracy and national identity.
