Abstract

The name of Carlos Lacerda (1914-1977) is frequently related to the controversial politician whose speeches have had intense enthusiasm and whose actions were implacable in several decisive moments of Brazilian history. As every influent and combative public man, he collected admirers and enemies. However, he did not feel affected by them. Lacerda had a rhetoric ferocity of a politician entirely engaged with crucial issues of the nation, but he has developed a patient and committed analytical lucidity because of his close relation with literature, as a writer, an editor, a playwriter, an essayist or an erudite reader. The intellectual versatility of Lacerda has led him to approach Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), who was always careful and receptive to the youth's creative potential. Thus, Mário showed interest in the young writer and politician from Rio, beginning a sincere and restless epistolary dialogue, that they had sustained until Mário's death. Ordered articles, disagreements among peers and discussions about the complex relation between literature and political engagement are some of the themes frequently found the letters, that demand compilation and study to explain the aspects and contexts wherein they were. Therefore, this project aims at developing an annotated and reliable text edition of the correspondence between Mário de Andrade and Carlos Lacerda, according to the methodological patterns of the Collection of Mário de Andrade's Correspondence, from 43 manuscripts known until then, 39 of Carlos Lacerda and 4 of Mário de Andrade, in order not only to reconstitute the relationship between these two prominent characters of the Brazilian culture, but also to broaden the knowledge of their papers in literary, cultural and political dimensions of our history.
