Abstract

The French-Swiss film director Jean-Luc Godard is one of the key authors in the global context cinematic language renovations of the second half of the twentieth century. His work had great impact and repercussion, both cultural and political, in Brazil throughout the 1960s. He guided the debates engaged within the national film critic, was one of the main references among the great Brazilian filmmakers of the period, and also received special attention among the bureaucrats of the Federal Police in charge of censorship actions - two of his films have even been banned during the military dictatorship. Thus, this research will investigate the historical reception of Jean-Luc Godard's films and ideas in the Brazilian culture, from 1961 to 1970 - the period his work had greatest repercussion in the country. To this end, we will use a corpus of primary sources produced by different communities of spectators, and structure the dissertation into three parts. In the first part, we will analyze film critics produced on Godard films and published in three newspapers of great insertion at the time (Jornal do Brasil, Correio da Manhã and O Estado de S. Paulo); in the second part, we will identify the appropriations that filmmakers Glauber Rocha and Rogério Sganzerla made of the Godardian work in their aesthetic and ideological projects; in the third part, we analyze the censorship reports issued on the director's movies. Thus, we aim the historical understanding of Brazilian cultural aspects during the given period from the reception of the work of a foreign artist. (AU)
