Abstract

The proposed research internship to be undertaken in England will complement and expand the doctorate research being conducted in Brazil. The main project explores the re-positioning of radio in contemporaneity due to digital technologies, and the main goal is to define radio's present relevance as a social institution. The ancillary research herein proposed seeks to recognise the essential features of the medium, along with the possibilities brought by digital technologies the radio enterprises should be attentive to. This investigation is based on the comparison of both Brazilian and European radio, in order to determine similarities and differences in radio production, programming formats, audience responses and public policies. The hypothesis is that Brazilian radio can profit from the observation of foreign radio practices, in regard to relationship with listeners, the appropriation of digital distribution methods and programmes' formats that are not so common in Brazil. As methodology, we seek to listen and analyse radio programming - both on dial and on the internet -, maintain contact with practitioners and other radio researchers, besides the bibliography survey possible through the destination institution's library. As result we expect to determine which are the best practices to conquer audience in a competitive media environment and how they may apply to Brazilian radio's economic model. (AU)
