Abstract

Mastitis is a disease of the mammary gland, result of infection of the udder by pathogenic agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and algae. Bacteria are the main cause of mastitis. Regarding the causative pathogen of mastitis can be classified into contagious and environmental. They presenting different characteristics and forms of combat. The disease is responsible for great economic losses in the dairy production. For the dairy producer can profit with this activity, it is necessary that losses are minimized. Reproduction of milk cows is another important factor in a commercial property, and the decline in reproductive indices accentuate the producer's losses. When combined the two factors, reproduction and mastitis, the economic loss to treatment of sick animals and hormones and semen doses increase exponentially. Some experiments were carried out in order to try to prove and understand how the disease acts on the fall of bovine reproduction. Animals with clinical mastitis or subclinical have lower conception rate, increased interval between calving and first insemination, higher miscarriage rate, and decrease the release and the blood concentration of reproductive hormones. The pathogen responsible for infection of the mammary gland is also a factor that leads to reproductive declines. Gram negative bacteria such as E. coli lead to a drop of 32% in reproductive parameters.
