Abstract

This research has the goal of analyzing the sequencing and narrative processes utilized in the creation of photobooks in the 21st century, focusing in the author's intensions and in the way the work is critically received. To achieve such goals, this study will focus in the winning photobooks from the Paris Photo / Aperture Foundation Photobook Awards between 2013 and 2015, performing a semiotic analysis of the content of the winning books, conducting in depth interviews with the authors and analyzing its critical reception. With this material it is expected to identify recurring or innovative editing techniques inside the awarded photobook world. Understanding such narrative processes is a much needed task to deepen the knowledge regarding contemporary photography, since it is presenting itself more and more as a sequential art, focusing in the connections made between images and not only in their internal content.
