Abstract

The intravenous therapy is one of the most frequently performed interventions in healthcare. For solution and drugs infusion by intravenous route, before the advent of the infusion pumps, the practice was accomplished exclusively through gravity-driven infusion sets. Despite the technological improvement, especially in low volume and infusion rate, inaccuracy and medication errors are presented during the use of infusion pumps, compromising patient safety. Studies had been demonstrating the influence of hydrostatic pressure on syringe infusion pumps performance, as well as, the solution density influences. The impact of such knowledge on nursing protocols to syringe infusion pumps positioning is still lacking. Objective: This study aims to determine how variations in height and density of the infused solution can influence accuracy of syringe infusion pumps. Methods: Experimental study, to be performed at the Nursing Experiment Laboratory - (LEEnf) - at Unifesp. Three syringe infusion pumps will be studied, three equipment of the same manufacturer, in two infusions rates (R1: 0.5ml/h and R2: 10.0ml/h). The studied solutions will be sodium chloride 0.9% in water (D1) and parenteral industrialized solution (D2). The solutions will be subjected to density analysis by means of specific mass range dosimeter 1.800 g/ml to 2.000 g/ml, brand Furlab®, Incoterm, São Paulo- Brazil, and the osmolality with the Osmometer brand PZL®, PZL - 1000, manufactured in Londrina - Paraná- Brazil. To verify the influence of the equipment positioning on the accuracy, the syringe infusion pumps will be placed at the level of the distal end of the infusion line (A1), 30 cm above the level of the exit line (A2) and 30 cm below (A3), To analyze the accuracy, will be used Shimadzu® balance, analytical precision, model AUY-220, made in Japan. A total of 36 experimental situations will be done in random way. The data will be stored in spreadsheets and exhibited, descriptively in tables and graphics. The obtained data will be expressed as average and standard deviation, and submit to variation analyses according to t Student and ANOVA tests, significance level set less or equal as 0.05. (AU)
